BOOZED-UP worker who went on a demolition rampage in a 25 tonne mechanical digger has been jailed. Disgruntled Darren Verity, 53, went on a wrecking spree after he was sent home from work for being unfit through drinks and drugs. Verity, of Bradford, West Yorkshire, was jailed for 14 months today after smashing up his boss’s £100,000 Range Rover and a truck. He had been employed by Thomas Crompton Demolition, in September, last year. Company boss Thomas Crompton had ordered him home, but an hour later Verity returned to the site, jumped into 360degree excavator and smashed Mr Compton’s black Range Rover Sport. He then drove across on his caterpillar tracks and smashed the huge metal shovel into one of the company’s lorry cabs. And Verity was about to continue his rampage and destroy more of the company’s 60 strong fleet of lorries before Mr Compton himself managed to disable the digger. He, helped by a couple of employees, managed to wrestle Verity, who was fighting to try and restart the vehicle, out of the cab. Mr Crompton said:”He [Verity] has been dismissed numerous times in the past and given chance after chance. I’ve given him about six or seven chances. “He came into work on Saturday and was unfit for work. “He went home and came back. He was very intoxicated, his eyes were glazed over and he was like a man possessed. “I think he’d had more to drink at home and taken cocaine - he was coked out of his head. “He has got his own keys for the excavator and smashed my car, which on another day could have had my baby nephew asleep inside, and he has then gone to destroy the lorries, which were all parked up. “We are not open to the public on Saturdays but there were workers carrying out maintenance on the vehicles and there was a real danger to life. “If that shovel hits you you are looking at losing a limb or even your life.” Mr Crompton said he had recently leant Verity money to pay for his mother’s funeral. “And, to be fair, he’s paid that money back,” said Mr Crompton. “We could not have done more for him. “But, we have a very strict policy so far as being unfit for work through drink or drugs.” Videos, which went viral, showed Mr Crompton’s sister Margaret running towards the moving digger gesturing for Verity to stop, before Mr Crompton managed to reach the dead mans handle in the cab and disable the vehicle. “There was a real danger to life and property and we are pleased nothing more serious happened,” said Mr Crompton. Verity pleaded guilty to two charges of criminal damage on September 28 last year, at Bradford Crown Court. CCTV footage and mobile phone film played in court showed him destroying the black top-of-the-range 4x4 Range Rover before deliberately crashing into a Daf truck. Prosecutor Ryan Donoghue said Mr Crompton managed to climb into the cab of the digger and despite struggling with Verity he was able to pull an emergency lever to stop the machine. Verity was shouting abuse as he was restrained on the ground and made threats to “come back and burn the rest,” the court was told. The two vehicles wrecked by Verity would have been worth a total of more than £200,000 when new. Verity’s barrister, Giles Bridge, said the offending was out of character. Verity was suffering a personal crisis at the time after two bereavements. He had mental health issues and had downed a few cans of lager that morning. Sentencing, Recorder Simon Eckersley described the offence as a shocking and wanton act of premeditated vandalism. Recorder Eckersley commended Mr Crompton’s bravery in stopping the digger. The CCTV showed the vehicle’s bucket ripping the truck’s cab unit apart “like it was tin-foil,” he said. He told Verity: “In my view the inevitable prison sentence must be served immediately.” Mr Crompton said shortly after the wrecking spree that he feared Verity was heading towards the company’s fleet of 60 vehicles valued at £6million. He and staff members were in the office cabin at the depot at around 10.20am when they heard an almighty crash.
